Working While Wandering: Real Talk About Remote Work on the Road

Working While Wandering: Real Talk About Remote Work on the Road

When Tasha and her husband Matt first hit the road, they already had the advantage of working remotely. Back in their sticks-and-bricks, they both worked from home, so it was a pretty natural transition to move their 9-to-5s into their RV.

Whether you call it remote work, digital nomad life, or just working from the road, this lifestyle comes with its own set of joys and challenges. In this episode, Tasha sits down with Jenn and Jennifer (yes, the two Jens!) for some real talk about what earning an income while wandering actually looks like.

Remote Work vs. Digital Nomad

For Tasha, remote work is her daily routine, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CST, Monday through Friday. She logs in and works her minimum 40 hours a week from wherever she’s parked. The beauty of being a digital nomad is the flexibility to live and work from anywhere. That might mean relying on multiple internet options (Starlink, hotspots, data plans), building in travel to rallies and events, or running a business from your rig.

Both Jenn and Jennifer shared how their businesses enable them to live nomadic lifestyles. Jenn runs her own design business, and while she loves the freedom of setting her own schedule, she admitted the stress of unpredictable income is real. Jennifer, on the other hand, runs a bigger company, RV Roofing Solutions, which means juggling teams, payroll, and keeping business flowing, all while traveling full-time.

Work Camping, Camp Hosting, and More

Of course, not every job for RVers is online. We also explore the world of work camping and camp hosting. Jenn and her husband have done both — sometimes in the same season! Work camping typically involves getting paid for your hours, sometimes with a site included, sometimes not. Camp hosting is often more of a volunteer role where you trade time for your campsite.

Both Jenn and Jennifer have also involved their kids in their work experiences. Sometimes that means uniforms and real responsibilities. Some opportunities are limited by state laws or park rules. But for families, it can be a great way to keep everyone included in the adventure.

Traditional Jobs on the Road

Tasha works a very traditional copywriting job for a healthcare system. Her schedule doesn’t bend as easily as Jenn’s or Jennifer’s does, so there are days she misses out on adventures or excursions. But there are also perks she doesn’t take for granted—like job security, health insurance, and a steady paycheck.

Tasha’s favorite part is that when her workday ends, she’s exactly where she wants to be. Whether that means stepping out into a national park, taking her family on a hike, or going on a glass-bottom boat tour in the Keys, she never forgets the why behind her lifestyle.

Finding Your Fit

There’s no one right way to work while wandering. Some RVers build businesses. Some take seasonal jobs, like the beet harvest or resort gigs. Others dive into creative side hustles, like Etsy shops, baking artisanal bread, or even house-sitting.

The important thing is to plan ahead, know your needs, and remember that flexibility is key. This lifestyle isn’t always easy, but the trade-offs — freedom, adventure, and more time in the places we want to be with the people that matter to us — make it worth it.
